22” lagunna planer

Wiseline service was excellent and quick delivery. The planers finish is excellent, however machine did need some set up to get feed rollers to move stock through planer

Laguna PX22 - it’s about the quality not the speed

I purchased this planer in September 2022 from Wiseline. Here are pros, cons and things to consider to ensure a successful purchase and experience.

1. When you receive the machine and unpack it, check the infeed and outfeed first! If the rollers are not set as per the manual, the machine will work poorly. In my case they were not calibrated, I lost/wasted 2 months reaching out to Laguna as per the manual but when I called Wiseline, they helped me out really quick to fix it recently which made up for the lost time. The infeed/outfeed is very sensitive. Once the rollers are set, torque mark them and should never have to adjust them again.

2. The machine cannot accept multiple boards or it jams ups up. The only way you can feed multiple boards is if they are jointed separately, planed to the same thickness separately, then fed together again only if they are the same thickness. If a board is thicker then the other, the thinner board won’t catch and not move. This happens because the infeed roller is solid and on springs. If it was make of multiple segments of rollers then I think this issued would be addressed.

3. The finish is outstanding. Your sanding time will be greatly reduced. The slower you go, the less sanding you will have. You can cut end grain, wavy, knotty and tear out is gone. You can basically go in any direction of the grain the finish is still superb.

4. You cannot sharpen the blades, so once you use them up it’s a costly replacement. However, they do last awhile.

5. The table top must be waxed or coated. If the machine rollers are properly calibrated and it randomly jams or boards don’t move, a good waxing or lubricant spray will fix it. Again infeed/outfeed rollers are very sensitive.

6. Lastly snipe. If you started with smooth boards done on the jointer, then have the bottom roller under the outfeed roller set flush or below the table to eliminate snipe. If start with rough milled boards and not smooth, you need the bottom outfeed roller set slightly about to push the boards or they jam at the very end. However if you leave the roller too high, it snipes so if the machine hand this bottom roller on lever so you skip the wrench snipe can be eliminated.

Because the finish of the boards is best I’ve seen compared to other planers, I don’t mind the work arounds and speed. Just consider your needs and see if this planer is right for you. I need high quality finishes and don’t mind the extra time it takes to get even if have to mill one board at time or deal with the odd snipe. 4 out of 5.
