HOW A BROKEN PAIR OF PLIERS BUILT AN AMERICAN ICON

In 1857, Mathias Klein emigrated from Germany and set up a modest forge shop in Chicago’s bustling business district. At the time, the "communications industry" was nothing more than raw bare wire strung across primitive telegraph poles.

The only job Mathias Klein ever did "halfway" was the first tool he ever made. A telegraph lineman brought a broken pair of side-cutting pliers to the shop. Klein forged and finished a new half, riveted it to the lineman’s intact original half, and sent him back to work. Shortly thereafter, the other original half broke. Mathias Klein forged the second half—completing the very first pair of genuine Klein pliers.

Through the Civil War, the dawn of commercial electricity, and the expansion of modern telecommunications, Klein Tools grew alongside the professionals who powered North America. Today, five generations later, Klein remains family-owned and committed to manufacturing the world's finest hand tools.

Professional Buying Guide

Selecting The Right Klein Tool For The Trade

Essential trade specifications, ergonomics, and engineering insights for electrical and mechanical professionals.

High-Leverage Lineman's Pliers

Klein high-leverage lineman pliers position the rivet closer to the cutting edge, providing up to 46% greater mechanical cutting and gripping power compared to conventional designs. Induction hardened knives cleanly shear ACSR, screws, and hardened wire.

Cushion-Grip Screwdrivers

Features internal flanges that provide a solid, twist-resistant blade anchor inside the handle. Special heat-treated chrome-plated shanks with precision-machined tips resist slippage in commercial terminals and electrical panels.

Electrical Test & Safety Instruments

Engineered to comply with stringent CAT III / CAT IV safety ratings. Non-contact voltage testers (NCVT series) provide reliable dual-range sensitivity, audible beepers, and bright visual indicators to verify live circuits safely.

Precision Strippers & Crimpers

Klein-Kurve® handles provide curved ergonomic comfort for repetitive wire preparation. Precision-ground stripping holes cleanly remove insulation from 8–20 AWG solid and stranded copper wire without nicking conductive core material.
