How do I choose between 18V/20V and 40V/60V platforms?
18V/20V systems are the universal trade benchmark, offering the broadest catalog of specialized tools. Step up to 40V max or 60V MAX when running sustained high-draw applications — such as 12″ dual-bevel miter saws, large 7″–9″ grinders, or SDS-Max rotary demolition hammers — where corded-equivalent sustained amperage is mandatory.
Can I cross-share batteries between different tool brands?
No. Each manufacturer uses proprietary pinout interfaces, battery cell communications, and electronic safety protocols. Milwaukee M18 packs will not fit DEWALT 20V MAX or Makita LXT tools without unsafe third-party adapters that bypass thermal overload telemetry. Within a single brand, battery packs are backwards-compatible across tool generations in that voltage class.
Should I purchase a complete combo kit or bare tools?
If you are establishing a new battery platform, a combo kit provides the highest upfront value, delivering chargers, high-capacity batteries, and contractor bags at a substantial bundle discount. Once your battery fleet is established, buying bare tools (“tool-only”) allows you to expand your capability without paying for redundant chargers.
